Top 10 security tools

Comments

Among of these tools aren't widely known but these are the most used by IT Security Person. Not just because among of them are free but these tools also very powerful. These tools are used for scanning vulnerability, threat detection and prevention, analyzing, exploit, sniffing, password recovery, and so on. Check out the list below:

  1. Nessus
  2. Even Nessus not anymore freeware and now it is fee licensed but it still the most popular and powerful vulnerability scanner that can be run on UNIX and windows featuring high speed discovery, configuration auditing, asset profiling, sensitive data discovery and vulnerability analysis of your security posture.

  3. Wireshark
  4. Wireshark, before known as ethereal that already built-in in Linux is a open source network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, probing down only into the level of packet detail that you need. It has several powerful features, such as a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session. It also supports hundreds of protocols and media types.

  5. Snort
  6. Snort is an open source network intrusion prevention and detection system utilizing a rule-driven language, which combines the benefits of signature, protocol and anomaly based inspection methods and a network intrusion detection and preventions system that can detects thousands of worms, vulnerability exploit attempts, port scans and other suspicious behaviour.

  7. Netcat
  8. Netcat is a featured networking utility which reads and writes data across network connections, using the TCP/IP protocol. It is designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time, it is a feature-rich network debugging and exploration tool, since it can create almost any kind of connection you would need and has several interesting built-in capabilities. Featuring tunnelling mode which allows special tunnelling such as UDP to TCP, with the possibility of specifying all network parameters (source port/interface, listening port/interface, and the remote host allowed to connect to the tunnel.

  9. Metasploit Framework
  10. Metasploit Framework is an advanced open-source platform for developing, testing, and using exploit code. The extensible model through which payloads, encoders, no-op generators, and exploits can be integrated has made it possible to use the Metasploit Framework as an outlet for cutting-edge exploitation research. It ships with hundreds of exploits, as you can see in their online exploit building demo and it makes writing your own exploits easier. This is one of my favourite exploit tools.

  11. Hping2
  12. Hping is a command-line oriented TCP/IP packet assembler/analyzer but offers far more control over the probes sent. This handy little utility assembles and sends custom ICMP, UDP, or TCP packets and then displays any replies. It also has a handy traceroute mode and supports IP fragmentation. This tool is particularly useful when trying to traceroute/ping/probe hosts behind a firewall that blocks attempts using the standard utilities. This often allows you to map out firewall rulesets. It is also great for learning more about TCP/IP and experimenting with IP protocols.

  13. Kismet
  14. Kismet is a layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic. It identifies networks by passively sniffing (as opposed to more active tools such as NetStumbler), and can even decloak hidden (non-beaconing) networks if they are in use. It can automatically detect network IP blocks by sniffing TCP, UDP, ARP, and DHCP packets, log traffic in Wireshark/TCPDump compatible format, and even plot detected networks and estimated ranges on downloaded maps. As you might expect, this tool is commonly used for wardriving and also warwalking, warflying, and warskating, and so on.

  15. Tcpdump
  16. Tcpdump is an old time IP sniffer and not have pretty GUI but it does great task came also with fewer security holes. It is great for tracking down network problem came with separate windows port named Windump. TCPDump also is the source of the WinPcap packet capture library, which is used by a lot of others network tools.

  17. Cain and Abel
  18. It can recover passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols. It is also well documented. This is one of my favourite password recovering tools. Some of antivirus will detect this tool as threat so please exclude the path before use with antivirus or maybe you just disable antivirus.

  19. John the Ripper
  20. John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many flavors of UNIX, DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect weak UNIX passwords. It supports several crypt(3) password hash types which are most commonly found on various Unix flavors, as well as Kerberos AFS and Windows NT/2000/XP LM hashes. Several other hash types are added with contributed patches. You will want to start with some wordlists, which you can find here, here, and here.

Among of this top 10 network security tools are my favourite and most used while hacking. Maybe you also familiar with these tools and want to share something with me.

Making money with your twitter

Comments

Do you have a twitter? Register now because a lot of benefit you can get from it such as making money, making friend, and gain knowledge. But what I want to share with you today is how you can earn money with twitter by selling your twitter space to advertiser. Program called Twittad offer you to make money that way.

The more followers you have the more money you can earn by selling your space on twitter. At first I registered, I only have around 28 followers and my twitter worth $2.80 per month. You actually can set by yourself how much your twitter worth but more lower the price you give is more attractive to advertisers. You can calculate how much your twitter worth here.

But my personal opinion, placing ads on our twitter is not really work as placing ads on blog. It is because I myself rarely go to others twitter pages that I follow since their entire tweet already appear on my pages. I’m not sure how we can get profit from it since I just registered with twittad.

So, are you already giving it a try? So what do you think about this program?

My embarrassing moment at Microsoft Technet Summit

Comments

This embarrassing moment is happened at Microsoft Technet Summit 2009. Actually I’ve a lot message to give within this post for all reader. I start my morning with sleepy face that time because I only slept for 1 hour that night, sacrificed my sleep’s time to research about affiliate. Without having a breakfast I was rushing to that event because it already too late and when I arrived it already started. The speaker already has a speech that time and my friend already have a sit, thanks to him because he reserved one sit for me.

The embarrassing story starts here. Because I’m so sleepy I can’t focus with speaker's speech with my stomach filled with air (because not breakfast) and I think I need a break. So I have my way to the toilet to toss away all the air in my stomach (hehe). Because so sleepy my view was so narrowed and when I enter to the toilet I saw people going to the left and right. I choose to go to the left side. Suddenly I rammed with someone and I said sorry but he not responded. When I looked to his face I saw his face look like me. Owh god that’s me and the thing I’d rammed before actually a mirror. Gosh! At that time, two person look at me with their face telling me that they want to say WTF, WTH, WTZ or something like that.

Moral of the story

It’s ok for you to have a lot of jobs but you need to remember that we all human and have a limit. We need to schedule our time properly. Yes I have my own schedule but I not really follow it. It’s my mistake. Also, it’s ok for you to blog but please take a little bit REST!

I don’t know if you really understand my stories because I’m not good on it and my English still sucks but hopefully you take notice on the moral of story. A lot of new thing I’ve learned at Microsoft Technet Summit 2009 and I’ll make a report of what have happened at that conference later. So do you have an embarrassing moment like I did? Need to share? Share it here now!

2009 Planning

Comments

Everyone have wishing something to archive this year and they hope this year will be their successful year. To archive something, off course we need to make a proper planning. I also have my own plan this year but what I need to write now is only a plan for this blog. I think every bloggers also should have their own plan and have something to aim this year as pro blogger as John Chow and John Cow also have one.

Today is already 7th January 2009, but I hope it still not too late for me to make this plan. After bought my own domain 2nd January 2009 it will be my first step to succeed this year. It’s showed that how serious I’m to be a better blogger someday. 133tTech will be my own brand or product now and I really love this name because “133t” mean elite and “Tech” mean technology. Of course I’m not as elite as my blog’s name but this will be my future target and I hope I’ll be as elite as my blog’s name. As Donald Trump said: “Think big and Kick Ass”. It’s only the people who really think big and have a long vision can have a great success. Why you must be satisfied making $100 whereas you can make $1000? Why be satisfied making $1000 when you can make a million? And so on. Below is my list of planning for this year:

  1. To Improve English and writing skills.

  2. To make a better article we need to possess a good English and writing skills. Even we have a good knowledge about what we need to write, but without having better English and writing skill, maybe users will misunderstood what we really want to tell them. Even I’m not so sure this article have a grammatical error or not. To archive this, I’ve bought an Oxford Guide to English Grammar books and have my elder sister to teach me. To improve my English is also one of my purposes of blogging.

  3. To improve my Information and Technology knowledge.

  4. I intend to share a very good IT knowledge to my visitors and what I’ve doing everyday is to connect myself with a latest IT knowledge every day. What I’ve already doing is to have better sources like lifehacker.com, techcrunch.com, digg.com, wired.com and a lot more. I’ve subscribed this entire sources using Google’s reader. I hope this year I’ll learn a lot of latest knowledge.

  5. To gain more traffic to my blog (visitor)

  6. Traffics are important for all blogs. Without have traffics, blog is solitary. Is like restaurant without customers. Entire of my blog’s traffics come from Google, blog directories such as www.mybloglog.com (I got lot of traffic from this), www.blogcatalog.com, link baiting at forum, commenting at top bloggers’ blog, and etc. For this year I think I must spend a lot of hour on generating traffic to my blog other than spending a lot of hour on making an article. I need to promote my blog to more social networking site like I’m doing now at www.facebook.com (and it really generates traffics). I think is important to socialize on internet and after that exchange a blog link with them. This is important because as for example the restaurant with a great and cheap food but without people notice it, of course you can’t make any sell even a glass of water.

  7. To have my own hosting

  8. Actually I only have a domain name and hope this year I can have my own hosting because it’s too limited blogging without have own hosting.

There will be a lot more what I need to doing this year but my entire plan above is what I’m thinking right now. Last but not least is, I need to change my attitude and push myself to give a lot of hour on work than sleep and I wish a very good luck to myself.

So what are you plans this year? If you have one please share it here.

Tumblr, another way to share thought

Comments

Hurm, how i suppose to start this. Actually, today I'm registered with tumblr after i read a posting at Johncow blog. He gave a very nice tips about how to drive traffic to your blog without depend on Google's traffic and using tumblr is one of his tips.

If blog is like a journal then tumblr is like scrapbook that you can create a fast post to share your thought, images, and audio. Unlike Twitter, Tumblr is more robust because it offer sharing picture, videos, links, quotes, short snippets of text and others. It is so easy to setup and use. But what I hate is, when I found out that it spelled my Capital with wrong letter. It should be Kuala Lumpur not Kuala Lumpar (Hehe).

I just give it a try and why dont you also give it a try and my thumblr id is besballbat.tumblr.com.

I got my own domain name

Comments

Yesterday I bought a new domain from my friend Mohd Fairuz only RM58 for 2 years. Proud to announce now my domain name is www.133ttech.com. I bought this because he said this is offer price. I just believed it in the name of friendship. It is great to have own domain name and I’m one step to become a real blogger. If you want to buy a domain name you can contact Mohd Fairuz.

Why I choose to have my own domain? I think it’s time for me to have my own brand by get out of blogspot.com. As John Chow(one of my favourite blogger) said “most don’t treat blogging seriously because of its low cost and if blogging cost for $100k++ to start, a lot more people will treat it seriously”. So if you want to take this seriously (not mean serious) and haven’t done so, it’s time for you to have one now. More older your domain, more better.

This short post is about how to change password for windows XP using window command prompt.
